Meet the turtles in Lankayan


Selingan Turtle Island, lying 40 km north of Sandakan has long been famous for its frequent turtle nesting on its shore; especially in seasons from month of July to October. However, what most people do not know yet is Lankayan Island dubbed as ‘Paradise Island of Sulu Sea’ is also frequented by sea turtles; especially Green and Hawksbill Turtle. Situated within The Trinational Sea Turtle Corridor, an area of over 7.8 million hectares, encompasses Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines, Lankayan Island is one of the many islands in the area that function as a foraging and nesting sites for sea turtles. At current, Lankayan Island hosts a non profit organization, Reef Guardian Sdn Bhd that is actively involve in marine conservation including sea turtle conservation. Much effort had been done and still in progress to increase the chances of turtles livelihood. Besides monitoring the hatching success of the turtles in Lankayan’s own turtle nursery, regular patrols are done to control turtle poaching. So, the next time you plan to visit Lankayan; do check out the turtle conservation effort by Reef Guardian.

Rainforest Discovery Centre, Sepilok


Situated along Sepilok road and a mid junction going in, leads one to Rainforest Discovery Centre. Officiated in August this year by Malaysia’s Prime Minister, now, tourist could also visit this centre and experience walking within the rainforest with well indicated path and sturdy canopies. A visitor to the centre could expect an enriching experience as the centre has a forest biology interpretation centre with exhibitions of posters and preserved faunas and floras. The centre also has a Plant Discovery Centre housing various sort of plants, herbs, and orchids with well design pathways and of course the trekking path where one could go on suspension bridges or climb the stairs of canopies. Occasionally, one would stumbled upon Orang Utan, or Macaques climbing from tree to tree, as well as other ground creatures such as snakes and lizards, most are harmless bearing in mind to keep a distance.
